RE: play any instruments?
I play guitar actively. I would play violin actively still if violin strings weren't so expensive. I also sing, but I hate my voice so I don't really count it as music.
List of instruments I use to play, up until I didn't have access to them:
Xylophone
Vibraphone
Marimba
Piano
Keyboard
Chapman Stick(Some people don't consider this a form of guitar, I do, mainly because fuck them).
Honestly, as far as starting with music goes, it's easiest to start with keyboard. Guitar is great because it's versatility is generally more accessible to beginners. If you want a nice easy start though, seriously, keyboard, all you do is press the key, you don't have to worry about tuning or anything, go for it. If you want to dive balls first and have a lot of options available right away, go for guitar. Finally, if you like a challenge, a good starter instrument would be violin. This is coming from a very economical perspective, though. Really, I would recommend taking time for each of them, as they all have their merits and they all build different skills. If you want to compose, it's always recommend to play multiple instruments, especially the instruments you plan to compose for. If you need any tips on how to get started or good songs to learn, or, if you can give me a good gauge of your current abilities I can throw together some lessons for you.
